Mamma Mia (2008) Director: Phyllida Lloyd
The first 20 minutes of musical Mamma Mia are pretty painful and I started to wonder what I'd let myself in for; cheese, bad singing and total over-acting. However, I rapidly started to realise this is actually the appeal of Mamma Mia and left myself go with it - it's bonkers and awful but in an absolutely fantastic way!
Amanda Seyfried plays Sophie who is getting married. She is living with her mother Donna (Meryl Streep) who owns a run-down hotel on a Greek island. She doesn't know who her father is but discovers her Mum's diary which gives clues about three men - Sam (Pierce Brosnan), Bill (Stellan Skarsgard) and Harry (Colin Firth). She invites all three prospective fathers to her wedding...and that's about it...with lots of singing and dancing!
The film looks glorious with most of the filming taking place on the Greek island of Skopelos. All of the cast are also having a ball and you can tell they're really enjoying it. Despite not having the best singing voices going, it's really fun to watch 'serious' actors such as Meryl Streep, Colin Firth and Pierce Brosnan making complete tits of themselves...especially in the catsuits during the end credits.
It's charming, it's fun and will cheer you up on a dark day. Enjoy it.
